Great weather in store for Coastal Series race 2!

Dear Trail Runners & Walkers,

Having got off to a damp start at Blythedale, the weather looks perfect ahead of Coastal Series race 2 at long-time favourite venue, Rocky Bay Resorts, near Scottburgh on Sunday.

Known for their variety, the Rocky Bay trails cover indigenous forests, palm-fringed grassland and canelands, farm dams and old orchards – all synonymous with the KZN coast. The sea views and option to cool off in the waves afterwards are the added bonuses at Rocky Bay!

Offering three distances – the 6km, 12km & 19km routes are all flowing and firm underfoot.

Walkers are welcome on the 6km and 12km courses.

Exploring Coffee will be back in full swing, bringing the caffeine fix AND some delicious food offerings, including smoked beef, chickpea & butternut curry and blueberry muffins!

Trail Shed and Funky Pants will also be at the event.

Rocky Bay Resorts have one of the best campsites in SA ad self-catering log cabins, so we highly recommend making a weekend of it. Contact them on 039 976 0336 for bookings.

Uitsoek delivers in 2020!

Cementing its reputation as one of the toughest Mountain Marathons in South Africa, Uitsoek 2020 delivered in a year when most doubted it would take place. Set deep in the mountains at the Uitsoek Hut on SAFCOL property, the marathon course climbs all the way to the top of the escarpment before traversing a short way across, before descending through the plantation and indigenous forest, crisscrossing streams and finally over a few ridges to the finish line. It’s a trail runner’s paradise in so many ways, and while the racing up front was hot, many were there just to get out into nature and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. Of the 300 runners, the majority opted for the shorter and more moderate 20km and 10km courses, while 75 trail die-hards took on the 40km beast.

The day dawned clear and warm and its was not long before a two-horse race established between defending champion Lucky Miya and first-timer Quintin Honey. Both have great reputations as mountain runners and they exchanged places for the lead throughout the first 4 hours of the race. It was on the steep descent that Honey experienced some cramping that allowed Miya to make a final break and win by 14 minutes. He too then cramped on the finish line. Local Nelspruit runner Cornel van Heerden closed out the men’s podium some 35 minutes back. In the women’s race, the difference between Janneke Leask and Brigitte Joubert on the finish line was only 10 minutes with Carien Booyse only a further 5 minutes’ behind.

“Uitsoek is Uitsoek” goes the saying among the locals. , they mean this race is unique, entirely its own challenge that needs its own yardstick and is a race that humbles many every year. It is grown from the ground and draws a core group of mountain runners bac who simply enjoy the challenge of moving in the mountains. “It’s always interesting to see who wins, but at the end of the day, it’s just about getting out there. “Everyone who ran and trekked at Uitsoek 2020 left with a sense of freedom we have been so sorely lacking this year, can’t wait to 2021” said Andrew Booth, the new organizer from KZN Trail Running has taken over the event from Sven Musica, who founded the race in 2015.

The KZN Trail Running Group

The KZN Trail Running Group was started during hard lock-down as a way to share the crazy running experiences that our community was getting up to.
Sharing info and asking questions. Trail conversations.

But as the group has grown, it has become an attractive place to advertise races, gear, haberdashery and to post pure spam. And that is not cool!

There are tons of different platforms for that stuff. This is not one of them.
Please people lets keep this group true to its original intentions!

Also, we have enough admin on our plates, so we are keeping it simple. Post Spam, and it will be deleted & the poster will be banned. No second chances.

Post advertising and we will give you one chance.

So be lekker!! We look forward to seeing more of your adventures and trail questions!
