Dear Trail Runners & Walkers,
The 1000 Hills Challenge is one of our longest standing premier events. Having been running for years before we even conceptualized the “Big 6”, it was a no brainer that it would join the prestigious group to complete this line up of bucket list experiences.
The 1000 Hills Challenge is one of our longest standing premier events. Having been running for years before we even conceptualized the “Big 6”, it was a no brainer that it would join the prestigious group to complete this line up of bucket list experiences.
Over the years it has attracted a cult following with participants returning each year to revel in the beauty and challenge of this unique trail event which explores the magnificent terrain of the Valley of a Thousand Hills around Nagle Dam. Last year it boasted the biggest field of participants in a Big 6 event and this year looks set to achieve similar bragging rights.
Taking place at the stunning Msinsi Nagle Dam just 40 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, it is the most accessible of the premier events, in terms of location, distances offered and event infrastructure. Participants can choose from 5, 10, 20 and 38km, the 5km having being introduced 2 years ago with the intention of opening up the event to a wider range of trail enthusiasts, and together with the 10km is well suited for most abilities and fitness levels of both runners and walkers.
The 38km has a well-deserved reputation for being a real tester. Trail warriors can expect a good dose of hills and technical variety, but the effort is well worth the reward of the achievement! Not to mention the sheer, raw beauty of the valley.
There is a variety of on-site accommodation available; a self-catering cottage, glamping safari tents, and camping are now available on the Island on the dam for a weekend retreat and roll-out-of-bed to the start line vibes!
See you on the trails,
Andrew, Lauren and the KZNTR Trail Team
