The Heart and Soul of Trail. Blythedale on Sunday.

The Heart and Soul of Trail.

Dear Trail Runners and Walkers,

Every so often, the trail throws you a moment that hits deeper than any finish time ever could. A moment that reminds you why we show up, why we grind up the climbs, why we keep putting one foot in front of the other.

On Sunday at Hebron Haven, in the middle of the field somewhere, two women crossed paths. Both experiencing cancer, carrying stories heavier than their packs. They stopped. They talked. They connected — the kind of connection that only seems to happen when you’re out on the dirt, breathing fresh air, moving forward together. At the finish there were hugs, tears, and that quiet feeling that something real had happened out there.

That’s the heartbeat of the trail.

Sure, we love watching the speedsters fly, and as we build toward the 2027 World Champs, we want our best runners to shine bright on home soil. But the trail’s magic isn’t only upfront — it runs through the whole field, right to the last person still working their way home. Everyone belongs out there.

A teenager new to the sport might be standing beside a grandfather rediscovering himself. Someone bouncing back from injury might be sharing the singletrack with someone bouncing back from life. A total first-timer might be running next to someone training for worlds. And somehow, out under the trees and along the ridges, those stories mix and lift each other up.

That’s the trail vibe: raw, honest, welcoming.
A place where pace doesn’t matter.
Where showing up is enough.
Where you’re seen for who you are, not how fast you move.

The trail lets you breathe deeper.
Heal a little.
Feel grounded again.
Remember what the earth does for you.

As the sport grows and develops — more structure, more competition, more spotlight — we have to keep hold of the real stuff: the courage, the determination, the tiny moments of kindness that never make the results page but stay with you long after the dust settles.

Because every weekend we see it: the fist bumps, the “you’ve got this,” the shared suffering, the laughter, the tears, the quiet victories.

This… is the trail.

And if we keep honouring every person who steps onto it — fast or slow, young or old, first or last — the true spirit of the trail will never fade.

North Coast crew — this one is calling your name. The Blythedale Trail Run lands this Sunday, and it’s the perfect excuse to roll a little further up the coast, hit those shaded forest trails, and soak in the morning vibes.

If you’re coming from Ballito, Umhlanga, Salt Rock… you’re basically around the corner. And yes, we know you like to enter fashionably late — but this is one you really don’t want to miss. Flowing forest singletrack, cool canopies, coastal air drifting through the trees… the kind of morning that resets your whole week.

And when you’re done? Head straight over to Grumpy’s Beach Bar and hang out with us. Cold drinks, chilled beats, ocean breeze — it’s the perfect post-run cool-down.

🌥️ Weather for Sunday

The forecast is looking pretty runner-friendly — cool, calm and mostly cloudy through the early morning, which is ideal for long forest climbs and keeping the legs fresh.

• Gentle breeze from the southeast/east (4–5 m/s)

Overall: Cool temps, soft light, and maybe a refreshing drizzle mid-morning — perfect trail-running weather. The forest handles a bit of moisture beautifully, so the trails should feel fast and grippy.

Bring your friends, bring your vibe, and settle in for a proper North Coast Sunday — forest trails first, chilled toes-in-the-sand session at Grumpy’s after.

See you out there!

Umdoni 100 Miler

Umdoni Park RECCE – First Taste of the 100 & 50 Miler

We headed for Umdoni Park this week for a RECCE of the 2026 Umdoni 100 Miler and 50 Miler, and honestly… it just felt right. Amazing South Coast energy — that mix of forest coolness, salt in the air, and the sense that you’re running through a place that’s been looked after with real love.

The trail network at Umdoni has expanded in the last few years. New trails cut, old lines revived, all weaving through what has to be one of KZN’s most intact coastal forests. You’re moving under these massive, breathing canopies one moment, then suddenly you’re out onto flowing forest roads, or catching a glimpse of the ocean through the trees. Bit of beach. Bit of river. Bit of golf course. All of it wild in its own way.

And the people? Even better. The local Thirsty Thursday crew — Umdoni’s TT runners. They know every twist of root and rock, and they carry that lekker, good-vibes energy that only a coastal running squad can bring. A beer, a run, a laugh… the kind of group that makes a place feel alive.

We also spent time with the team at Umdoni Golf Club and Trust, who are genuinely excited to have the event there. The clubhouse is magic — sea breeze, big deck, proper views — and they’ve opened the doors wide for race weekend. It’s going to be an incredible base camp for the event and will remain open 24/7

Getting on the ground helped us see what’s actually possible for a looped 100-miler and 50-miler here. So yes, there’ll be some refining, tightening, rerouting — the usual dance — before we announce the final course. But the bones of it? They’re exactly what trail runners dream of: forest, coast, space, flow.

We’ll launch everything soon. For now, we just wanted to share how pumped we are after this first real look.

Umdoni is special. This is going to be one for the books.
