Coastal Series kicks off at Blythedale on Sunday

Going into its 5th year, the much-loved Coastal Series kicks off this Sunday at Blythedale. Just 15min north of Ballito, this venue is popular not only because it is so accessible. Traversing lush indigenous forest, plantations, estuary and mangrove swamps with views of the ocean and the healing sea air, runners can’t get enough of beautiful Blythedale!

There is not a lot of climbing on any of the 3 routes on offer, but the sandy surface and coastal humidity make up for the hills and always pose a challenge!

Soak up the community atmosphere in an outdoor environment that has something for everyone and great value for money food & drink on offer at the venue, or wander down to Grumpy’s Bar and refuel with some fresh seafood with your feet in the sand!
Walkers welcome on the short & medium course and the 5km is perfect for children 5yrs and up.

Uitsoek is Uitsoek!

Set deep in the Mpumalanga mountains at the Uitsoek Hut on SAFCOL property, the Uitsoek Mountain Marathon has well and truly earned its reputation as one of the toughest Mountain Marathons in South Africa! Climbing all the way to the top of the escarpment, traversing a short way across before descending back to the hut, it’s a trail runner’s paradise, traversing indigenous forests, plantations, high-altitude grasslands, mountain streams and waterfalls. But those in the know don’t say “Uitsoek is Uitsoek…” for nothing – this race is unique, entirely its own challenge that needs its own yardstick… and it humbles many every year!

The shorter and more moderate 20km and 10km courses are still a challenge in themselves, visiting stunning waterfalls and dense forests.

It is grown from the ground up and draws a core group of mountain runners every year who simply enjoy the challenge of moving in the mountains. It’s always interesting to see who wins and this year it is the final event in the Mountain Marathon Series, so the racing will be fierce, but at the end of the day it’s just about getting out there and soaking up some raw mountain adventure!

A great, relaxed vibe at the Uitsoek Hut and those staying on site soak up epic sunrises over the valley and bonfires in the evening.
A weekend not to be missed!

The race took place under very hot conditions from September 24-26 at the Karkloof Country Club.

Of the 93 starters in the 100 Miler, 65 finished and 28 withdrew. The first withdrawal was after only 35km, while the final withdrawal was with only 15km to go.
As always the weekend was packed with action and drama, delivering an amazing spectacle of ultra-distance trail running.
