Welcome to our new KZNTR administrator!
Dear Trail Runners and Walkers,
As we move cautiously into the New Year, we are excited to welcome Nicola Rodger to the KZNTR team!
An occupational therapist by training and no stranger to the trails, she is a valuable new addition driving our entry administration!
Nicola will be available to assist runners with entry or race info queries from 8am – 12:30pm daily. You can get hold of her on 082 791 7069 (calls or whatsapp) or info@kzntrailrunning.co.za.
We know that some queries have slipped through the cracks while we have been short-staffed in recent times – thank you for your understanding and patience! If this applies to you, resend your query to Nicola so its at the top of her inbox.
Welcome Nicola, looking forward to many happy trails!
What does Level 3 mean?
Many of you would have seen our announcements on Social Media of the cancellation of our first 3 events for 2021. This has obviously been devastating for us as this is normally one of our busiest times of the year.
We wanted to clarify the situation of how the Lockdown Levels apply to trail running and KZNTR:
- KZNTR is a member of the South African Association for Mountain Endurance Sports (SAAMES), and we operate within their framework & approved protocols.
- The SAAMES approval covers Levels 1&2 only. There are no government approved protocols for trail running events under Level 3.
- As a result, Police Clearance Certificates, Public Liability Cover etc. would be impossible to obtain under these circumstances.
- Also, hospitals are full, so should a serious injury occur during an event, our Event Medical Plan would be seriously compromised.
So with this in mind and the current situation, we don’t really have a choice here.
We hope that, as a country, we regain control of the spread of the virus quickly so we can resume our events and other affected businesses can continue their operations.
For us, this will only be possible under Level 2 and we will be making decisions after 15 January 2021.
Please bear with the situation and do whatever you can to support the many businesses affected!
And keep safe!
How CAN KZNTR operate?
It is a huge blow to us that we are unable to operate our core business, and in some senses, we have gone back into “life-support” mode until the situation relating to events changes.
BUT…
As many of you know, we have conducted a few recce “events” in conjunction with Ranger Protect and in 2020 Andrew qualified as a Registered Guide.
We are building towards launching similar small group offerings for groups of up to 8 participants in the near future. These will be bespoke trail experiences guided by Andrew, into the Drakensberg, the Soutpansberg, and in Big 5 reserves in Zululand (among others). By booking the experiences as a group, participants can control their exposure, as well as allow us to taylor the experience for each group.
The experiences will involve running / trekking in wild spaces, camping under the stars, engaging with the work of a Game Ranger in these reserves and connecting with the surrounds in a very raw way. The experiences will be fully catered and varying accommodation options will be available.
Although this most definitely is a way to support us through these challenging times, it is also the coming together of a long-term dream of Andrew’s!
Anyone wanting a foot in the door early can email Andrew (andrew@kzntrailrunning.co.za) for more info and to make sure you get a first option.
Otherwise watch our social media channels (links below) for announcements… 👀
