The Runoceros Trail Run
A Fundraising Event for Rhino Conservation
14 September 2019
Course Details
Start time: 8:00 am (All events)
Distance: 5km | 10km | 15km
Water tables: ca. every 2.5km
A small climb out the campsite will then lead you along the fast, flat tarred road for about 500m before heading into the bushveld single track on the Moor’s game farm which borders the Ezemvelo conservation area. Passing by a small farm dam, which is frequented by an abundance of birdlife, runners will be treated to a short, steep, rutted climb to the top of the Hill. This is a good opportunity to catch your breath and appreciate the view of Wagendrift behind you. The route meanders along the ridgeline and then heads up into the grasslands along a jeep track which winds its way back down to the game reserve fence line. This is often a good place to spot waterbuck, Reed buck and other antelope. A slightly technical/rocky single track will lead you back up to the ridgeline, with spectacular panoramic views of the dam.
The 10km and 15km will be run as laps – where runners will run the 5km lap multiple times.

Purpose of the Fundraiser by Mike Tredway
I have been invited to participate in Rhino Peak Challenge in October 2019, a fundraising event for Rhino and Bearded vulture conservation where runners are requested to raise R50 000 towards conservation.
The Runoceros Trail Event is to assist my fundraising targets in the best way that I know how, organise a fun trail run with mates at one of my favourite places on earth, Wagensdrift Dam.
Places like Wagendrift exist because of outdoorsy people, and the same goes for wildlife. Rhinos and bearded vultures are both endangered species, due to habitat loss, poaching and poisoning, and it is our responsibility to ensure both of these animals survival for future generations to come.
Important Information:
This is a “Fun Day” so come support the Chubby Unicorns.
There will be no prizes for winners, no KidZone, only basic water tables and no official vendors. There are braai facilities at the venue so bring and braai/picnic. There will be Lucky draw prizes for participants.
All proceeds raised/entry fees received will be donated
directly to Rhino Peak Challenge – for more information click Here.
Registration
Online entries will close at Midday on Friday, 13th September at 12:00pm. On the day entries will be available at a R 50 surcharge fee (U18s exempt).
History of Rhino Peak Challenge
On World Rhino Day, the 22nd of September 2015, a small group of South
Africa’s finest Trail Runners were asked to ascend the iconic Rhino Peak
in the Southern Region of the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site. While establishing new FKT’s (Fastest Known Times) for the Rhino was a partial objective. The focus was to raise awareness, in a unique way, to the plight of Rhinos as well as the other endangered habitant of the Rhino Peak itself, the Bearded Vulture. These two very different creatures are a powerful symbol for South Africa’s threatened species and having these elite runners doing something special on the only Peak over 3000m in the world that resembles a Rhino sent an unprecedented message on behalf of the conservation community.
All proceeds raised/entry fees received will be donated directly to Rhino Peak Challenge.

Please ensure that you bring your own trail cup, water bottles and/or hydration packs for on course hydration and refills as water tables will be cupless!
