Cascades Trail Run
11 October 2026
Experience one of Pietermaritzburg’s premier trail running destinations at the Cascades Trail Run, held on a purpose-built trail network just minutes from the city centre. Set within a landscape of towering gum and pine plantations, indigenous forest, and dense bamboo groves, the routes offer a true escape into nature, with frequent panoramic views across the city.
Renowned as one of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading mountain biking venues, Cascades boasts a world-class trail network that provides an equally rewarding experience for trail runners. Expect flowing singletrack, technical rocky sections, punchy climbs, and exhilarating descents that create a varied and engaging run from start to finish.
The 18km route ventures onto the scenic Ferncliffe ridgeline before returning towards Cascades, while the 10km and 5km routes pack plenty of trail character and elevation into shorter distances. Whether you’re tackling your first trail event or looking for a challenging day on the trails, there’s a route to suit every level.
With race headquarters conveniently located at the Cascades Lifestyle Centre, runners and supporters can enjoy excellent facilities, easy access, and a vibrant event atmosphere. Featuring 5km, 10km, and 18km distances, and welcoming both runners and walkers, the Cascades Trail Run promises an unforgettable day of adventure on one of the region’s most iconic trail networks.

The 18km is the full Cascades experience. It includes proper climbs, long traverses and a good stretch along the Ferncliffe ridgeline. With around 740m of elevation gain, it is demanding without being extreme. The climbs are rewarded with wide views over Pietermaritzburg, and the route finishes with a fast, flowing descent that makes the effort worthwhile.

The 10km route at Cascades is a strong leg-tester and a great middle-ground option. Most of the 440m of climbing comes in the first half, after which the course opens up into a fun, rolling run back toward the finish. It is challenging, but very runnable, and ideal if you want a shorter distance that still feels like a proper trail run.

The 5km route at the Cascades Trail is short but not flat. With about 250m of elevation gain, it includes manageable climbs and a rewarding run down to the finish. It is well suited to beginners, walkers, or anyone looking for a fast, fun outing on quality trails. Run or walk, this route is all about enjoying the network and being part of the day.
