Runners are in for a treat this weekend, when KZN Trail Running (KZNTR) holds the anticipated Hilton Night Trail on Friday, 21 April. Featuring a 12km and 7km course, this exciting event allows participants to explore the scenic Hilton College Estate by moonlight while soaking up the festive atmosphere, braai facilities and hot showers.

Running in the dark, guided by only a headlamp, truly ignites the senses and makes for an enchanting experience for runners. However, it pays to be cautious when taking to the trails at night and Lauren Booth from KZNTR has offered several tips for runners participating in the upcoming event.

“Don’t underestimate the value of a good headlamp or torch and batteries,” she stressed. “Be sure to lift your feet a bit higher than normal as depth perception is not as good at night. Remember, running speed is deceptive at night. You may feel like you are moving really fast, but times are often a bit slower at night events.”

Booth also suggested that runners look up every now and then to check the route. “Running in a small bubble of light will awaken all your senses. Use them well and enjoy the rush,” she said. “Generally people feel like they are running much faster at night, but times usually reflect the opposite as its that little bit more difficult to navigate. It’s a very exhilarating experience though!”

A highlight of the Hilton Night Trail is the social element. It is tradition for runners together after the run to enjoy a boerewors roll, coffee and coldrink while sharing tales of the trail. The KZNTR KidZone will be available for the little ones and will include a short trip to the Hilton Wildlife Centre, guided by our experienced childminders, so the event truly makes for a fun family experience.

What’s more, 50% of the race profits go towards maintenance and conservation on the Hilton College Nature Reserve. For more information and to enter, visit the EVENT PAGE or contact Lauren Booth (082 791 7069 / lauren@kzntrailrunning.co.za).
