KZN Trail Running

Winter Series Table mountain

3rd JUNE 2018

Course Details

Challenging due to the ascent up the mountain – even the top racing snakes are reduced to a walk! The trail on top is a network of cattle tracks that and the course traverses half of the mountain edge before cutting back though the middle along a beautiful wetland and stream.

The course completely circumnavigates the mountain and involves significantly more ascent and descent. In sections of the course the trail disappears and participants have to follow markers through open grassland.

The course will circumnavigate the top of mountain, as well as contour along the base.

All courses are rated as technical due to the narrow cattle tracks and at times, rocky footing.

 5km route = 1 water table

10km route = 2 water tables,

18km route = 3 water tables.

The mountain has served as a refuge for its community throughout history as its cliffs make it easy to defend. The runners will have to make their way up the steep sides and over rocks to summit the mountain where stunning vistas await as they circumnavigate the top.

Distant views of Pietermaritzburg and the Umsunduzi River across to the Umngeni River and the hilltop panorama of the Valley of 1000 Hills. The view down onto Nagle Dam is also impressive and on a clear day, the Drakensberg can be viewed from this spectacular vantage point.

The 7km course is challenging due to the ascent up the mountain – even the top racing snakes are reduced to a walk! The trail on top is a network of cattle tracks that and the course traverses half of the mountain edge before cutting back though the middle along a beautiful wetland and stream. The 12km course completely circumnavigates the mountain and involves significantly more ascent and descent. In sections of the course the trail disappears and participants have to follow markers through open grassland. The 20km course will circumnavigate the top of mountain, as well as contour along the base. All courses are rated as technical due to the narrow cattle tracks and at times, rocky footing.

The hilltop grasslands are wide open and the valley bush is thick- considering the venue is so close to Durban and Hillcrest, you could not ask for wilder. The Phezulu field team are constantly working on these trails to provide the best tracks possible!
